About Independent 4 Grey

Independent 4 Grey is a community-led organisation working to build local power and strengthen civic participation across the region of Grey. We believe that when communities are organised, informed and connected, they can shape the decisions that affect their lives.

We are looking for an exceptional organiser to help us build that capacity from the ground up.

The Role

This is a rare opportunity to do meaningful, high-impact community work in one of South Australia's most diverse and significant regions — from the Spencer Gulf to the Far North, from the Yorke Peninsula to the West Coast.

You'll work directly with community members across Grey to grow our supporter base, identify and develop local leaders, build relationships in key towns and communities, and lay the foundations for effective long-term civic engagement. This is not a desk job. You'll be on the ground, making calls, attending meetings, running events and building genuine relationships across a large and varied region. You'll have access to high-quality training, peer support and resources.

You'll work within a clear strategic framework set by Independent 4 Grey, with real ownership over how you build relationships and manage your day-to-day work. You're someone who takes a brief and runs with it — proactive, resourceful, and accountable.

What You'll Do

Community Building & Listening

  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, local organisations and stakeholders across the region
  • Run local tactics to identify key issues affecting the people of Grey
  • Grow our supporter base in key towns and communities
  • Map the local landscape — who are the connectors, leaders and networks we should be working with?
  • Coordinate local events and activities that bring people together

Leader Development

  • Identify, recruit and develop local community leaders
  • Coach and support emerging leaders to build their own capacity and confidence
  • Connect local leaders with training programs and development opportunities

Organising Infrastructure

  • Maintain accurate records of supporters, contacts and activities using our organising technology
  • Document processes and learnings to strengthen our collective knowledge base
  • Develop and execute a field plan for your patch

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • High energy, resilience and initiative — you get things moving and don't wait to be asked
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence — you know how to build trust quickly across diverse communities
  • Comfortable picking up the phone and making cold calls to volunteers, organisations and community members
  • A track record of motivating and engaging people around a shared purpose
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities while taking clear direction
  • Committed to community-led change and local democracy
  • Current driver's licence and willingness to travel regularly within Grey

Desirable

  • Experience in community organising, grassroots advocacy, union organising or campaign work
  • Experience working in regional or rural communities
  • Proficiency with data management and organising technology
  • Fundraising experience
  • Public speaking confidence

Working With Us

  • Flexible working arrangements — work from home or locally
  • Regular support, supervision and connection to a wider community of practice
  • Access to high-quality training and professional development opportunities
  • After-hours and weekend work required at times, with time off in lieu
