Frequently Asked Questions
What is 'Independent for Grey'?
Independent for Grey is made up of local community members living in the electorate of Grey in South Australia. We're searching for better representation in Canberra. We're committed to Independence and reject big party politics which has left us without a voice for too long.
Were not a political party and we don't have political positions. Were committed to listening to the community and work towards identifying an amazing candidate to contest the next Federal election in the seat of Grey.
What is the ‘community listening phase’, and why is it so important?
The community listening phase is crucial to our purpose, we need to hear from the citizens of Grey and find out what is most important to them and what they want to see from their political representative. This gives us data to help select the very best candidate who is passionate about and committed to addressing the issues in Canberra.
We are conducting the listening in a few ways including our community survey, Kitchen Table Conversations and a range of online & face to face community events.
Who is the candidate?
We’re not sure yet, once we have enough information about what is important to the community we will move into a phase of ‘candidate searching’ followed by a selection process. We will only seek a candidate if there is sufficient community appetite to do politics differently.
If you would like to be considered you can complete an initial expression of interest by clicking here. We will then keep you updated as we move into the next phase.
How will a candidate be selected?
Candidates will be asked to respond to some value based questions as well as address the key issues identified in the community listening phase. We’ll also ask for a resume and any other relevant documents. We will then shortlist the candidates and complete an interview process to identify the best candidate.
The candidate will be accessed based on experience, values, connection to community, resources available and commitment to a campaign.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply, you can make a difference.
Why support an Independent candidate?
- People Over Party: Independent candidates prioritize the needs and interests of their community rather than adhering to party lines.
- Fresh Perspectives: They bring new ideas and innovative solutions, free from the influence of traditional party politics.
- Accountability: Independents answer directly to their constituents, not to party bosses, ensuring they remain focused on what’s best for the local community.
- Collaboration: They often work across party lines, fostering collaboration and finding common ground to achieve practical solutions.
- True Representation: By voting for an Independent, you're supporting a candidate who is committed to genuinely representing the diverse voices and needs of your community.
Supporting an Independent candidate means backing someone who is dedicated to making a real difference in Grey.
How is this project funded?
The major political parties have huge financial coffers to run electoral campaigns and take millions of dollars from the tax payer every year.
So far we are funded by small scale donations of time and money from members of the community. We welcome donations from people committed to our values - you can donate here to help change our political system.
